MTV plans to brings back “Beauty and the Geek”

MTV has ordered 6 episodes of Ashton Kutcher’s former CW show Beauty and the Geek, but this time as a celebrity version:

Negotiations are underway for MTV to air six episodes of what’s being called “Beauty and the Geek: Celebrity,” according to people familiar with the talks. In a twist on the show’s original format, everyday geeks would be paired with celebrity “beauties” as part of the social experiment at the core of the show.

In addition to the initial six episode order, MTV will likely retain an option for additional cycles of the series.

The deal puts Mr. Kutcher back in business with MTV, which have birth to Mr. Kutcher’s hidden camera series “Punk’d.” Mr. Kutcher produces via his Katalyst production banner.

Fox 21 parent 20th Century Fox TV has been talking to networks about picking up the show for several months now.

No word on which celebrities will be invited to take part on the show. Calls to Omarosa weren’t returned.

Monk Monk will enjoy one more season on USA Network before the star germaphobe solves his final case, the network announced today:

The final season is scheduled to begin airing in the summer of 2009.

“We want to build to a spectacular conclusion for this wonderful show. By many measures, ‘Monk’ is the most successful series in the history of basic-cable television, and it was certainly the original tentpole of our ‘Character’ brand,” said Jeff Wachtel, executive vice president of original programming with USA Network/co-head of original content with Universal Cable Productions.

“Our fans have been extremely dedicated, and season eight should prove to be a very satisfying reward,” he said.

Gasp. What will Tony Shaloub do after Monk? What did he do before? Anyone know?

NBC orders competitive dance show Not to be outdone by FOX and ABC, NBC has ordered a competitive dance show of its own from the producers of American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance:

The reality program will feature professional dancers from eight countries exhibiting different performance styles. “Lord of the Dance” Michael Flatley will host, and Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller will executive produce. […]

Each country’s team will present two dance soloists, a duet and a group. Their performances will be graded by judges from each participating country.

The judges have a tricky job as each country will perform in a different style unique to their culture — Shaolin monks from China vs. Bollywood dancers from India, for example. Troupes from Ireland, the U.S., Argentina, Russia and South Africa also are represented. […]

Several titles have been considered, with “Dance Masters of the World” and “Superstar Dancers of the World” as two of the top contenders.

NBC cancels “My Own Worst Enemy” and “Lipstick Jungle”

NBC cancelled it’s heavily-hyped Christian Slater drama My Own Worst Enemy and sophomore show Lipstick Jungle today:

The “Lipstick” cancellation had been anticipated following the show’s disastrous ratings when it moved to Friday nights two weeks ago.

Of course, NBC did the show no favors by shifting its time slot with virtually no advance notice, confusing fans of the serialized soap opera.

The writing also has been on the wall for “Enemy,” which has seemed to lose audience each week it was on the air. It didn’t help that the show’s lead-in, “Heroes,” has been fading in the ratings as well, but viewers simply didn’t seem interested in the heavily hyped Christian Slater hour.

We knew Lipstick Jungle was doomed when NBC moved it over to Friday, but My Own Worst Enemy’s cancellation only goes to prove the old network TV adage: All the hype in the world does not a show make. Remember that kids!

And both cancellations prove that NBC continues to be its own worst enemy.

CW Orders Five More Episodes of “Privileged”

CW's Privileged CW has ordered five more episodes of Privileged, bringing its total season one order to 18 episodes:

While not the same as a full-season, 22-episode order, the greenlight indicates The CW is happy with the show’s creative direction.

Airing Tuesdays at 9 after “90210,” “Privileged” has been a decent ratings performer for The CW. Last night’s episode earned a 1.7 rating among female teens, tying the series’ best numbers in that demographic.

Whew, good thing the CW finally came up with a teen-driven soap that viewers are tuning into besides One Tree Hill, 90210, Gossip Girl… Hey, if it ain’t broke, right?

ABC’s “Pushing Daisies” might already be dead

ABC drama Pushing Daisies ended production of its second season today and this season will likely be its last, according to industry sources:

Word of the show’s apparent death began spreading around Hollywood Thursday morning, though an ABC spokeswoman insisted no decision has been made on the show’s fate.

Under one scenario making the rounds, ABC might find a way to extend the options on the “Daisies” cast and crew for several months so that the show could be revived next season. But such a plan would be costly.

Producer Warner Bros. TV had no comment.

“Daisies” wraps production on its 13-episode fall order today. A decision to end the show has been expected for some time now, but it nonetheless represents a stunning reversal of fortune for the Warner Bros. Television-produced fantasy drama.

Has anyone actually watched this show? It actually seems like a novel approach to a series, but have you ever walked into work and overheard two co-workers raving over last night’s episode? Nah, didn’t think so.

FOX cancels “King of the Hill”

FOX cancelled long-running animated series King of the Hill, after renewing The Simpsons and American Dad:

The show’s most recent episode order of 13 half-hours will be its last, a Fox spokesman said Thursday. Given the lead time for animation, it’s likely the series will air its final episode sometime during the 2009-10 season.

News of “King’s” death isn’t a surprise. The show has cheated death several times over the past few years, with Fox coming close to pulling the plug more than once.

Sorry, Hank. Back to selling propane and propane accessories for you, my friend.
