MTV plans to brings back “Beauty and the Geek”

11/19/2008 Comments Off

Ashton Kutcher MTV has ordered 6 episodes of Ashton Kutcher’s former CW show Beauty and the Geek, but this time as a celebrity version:

Negotiations are underway for MTV to air six episodes of what’s being called “Beauty and the Geek: Celebrity,” according to people familiar with the talks. In a twist on the show’s original format, everyday geeks would be paired with celebrity “beauties” as part of the social experiment at the core of the show.

In addition to the initial six episode order, MTV will likely retain an option for additional cycles of the series.

The deal puts Mr. Kutcher back in business with MTV, which have birth to Mr. Kutcher’s hidden camera series “Punk’d.” Mr. Kutcher produces via his Katalyst production banner.

Fox 21 parent 20th Century Fox TV has been talking to networks about picking up the show for several months now.

No word on which celebrities will be invited to take part on the show. Calls to Omarosa weren’t returned.

CW Orders Five More Episodes of “Privileged”

11/13/2008 Comment

CW's Privileged CW has ordered five more episodes of Privileged, bringing its total season one order to 18 episodes:

While not the same as a full-season, 22-episode order, the greenlight indicates The CW is happy with the show’s creative direction.

Airing Tuesdays at 9 after “90210,” “Privileged” has been a decent ratings performer for The CW. Last night’s episode earned a 1.7 rating among female teens, tying the series’ best numbers in that demographic.

Whew, good thing the CW finally came up with a teen-driven soap that viewers are tuning into besides One Tree Hill, 90210, Gossip Girl… Hey, if it ain’t broke, right?

The CW renews “Everybody Hates Chris” for a fourth season

3/4/2008 Comment

Everybody Hates Chris, the comedy loosely based on the childhood of comedian Chris Rock, has been renewed by the CW for a fourth season:

Earlier today, the network announced that “Everybody Hates Chris” had been renewed for a fourth season. […]

“Chris” has performed the best of the Sunday sitcoms, according to the latest numbers, with a 0.9 household rating season average and a 0.4 average in the CW’s key 18- to 34-year-old demographic.

Although I’ve never watched the show, from what I’ve heard, it seems to be the funniest comedy on the CW by far.

“Gilmore Girls” cancelled after negotiations break down

5/3/2007 Comment

The CW will not renew Gilmore Girls for an eighth season, as previously speculated, after negotiations with its stars broke down this week:

The most recent four episodes of the show averaged a 1.8 rating among adults 18 to 49, which is strong for The CW.

The network was in negotiations with stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as late as last week, but the parties could not come to an agreement, sources familiar with the situation said. Cast contracts expired at the end of the current season, meaning new deals were required if the show was to continue.

The network and producer Warner Bros. Television released a joint statement announcing the decision: “Announcing the final season of ‘Gilmore Girls’ is truly a sad moment for everyone at The CW and Warner Bros. Television.”

Gilmore Girls fans will obviously be disappointed by this news, but let’s face it, the show was never the same after showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino left in the transition from the WB to the CW.

“Gilmore Girls” explore possible shortened eighth season

4/16/2007 Comment

Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham and executive producers are considering bringing back the CW drama for a shortened eighth season next year:

Negotiations to bring Gilmore Girls back for an eighth season took a veddy interesting turn on Friday. According to multiple sources embedded deep inside Stars Hollow, Lauren Graham — she on which all things hinge — is allegedly warming to the idea of returning for a shortened season, a la Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Word of this condensed scenario was “the talk of the set” on Friday, one day before shooting on the show’s current season was scheduled to wrap. My spy was quick to add, however, that nothing’s official and it’s very possible this whole thing could unravel before anything’s signed.

Does anyone really want another season of Gilmore Girls? Ever since the original show-runner left after negotiations with the CW broke down, the show has gone downhill. Time for Lorelai to retire to Stars Hollow… permanently.

‘Black Donnelly’s,’ ‘7th Heaven,’ ‘Wedding Bells,’ ‘Six Degrees’ Cancelled

4/3/2007 7 Comments

NBC cancelled The Black Donnelly’s, the CW cancelled 7th Heaven, FOX cancelled Wedding Bells, and ABC cancelled Six Degrees today:

The David E. Kelley’s dramedy “The Wedding Bells” has ceased production, but the network plans to air three more episodes. The Friday night drama most recently earned a mere 1.4 rating among adults 18 to 49.

ABC pulled “Six Degrees” last fall, then brought back the show as a March addition to Friday nights. Its last airing earned a 1.1 rating. Repeats of “Wife Swap” will air in its place.

NBC’s mob drama “Black Donnelly’s” filled a Monday night hole vacated by “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and has bled viewers nearly ever airing. Last night’s episode earned a 2.0 rating. “Donnelly’s” will be replaced by the reality series “The Wedding Crashers.”

The CW’s “7th Heaven” will finish its final season, with a finale to air May 13, but will not return this fall.

There’s no indication why four networks decided to cancel shows all on the same day, but NBC’s cancellation of The Black Donnelly’s really caught us off guard. NBC didn’t give this Irish mob drama a chance. Meanwhile, they’ve given Studio 60, a show with similar ratings, several chances this season.

Viewers must be getting tired of almost every new show being cancelled each season. Why bother trying out new shows if odds are networks will cancel them just as you’re starting to get into the show and it’s characters?
